Carolyn Harley was born Carolyn Regina Hyde on January 6, 1936, in Beloit, WI to Dr. William Marshall and Beaulah Hyde. She was raised by her loving grandparents Robert and Charlotte Hyde. Carolyn committed her life to Christ at a very early age and flourished under his care. As a child, Carolyn was a gifted pianist and soprano soloist. At the age of 14, she was the pianist for second Methodist church in Beloit, WI, where she thrived with the choir for many years. Not only was she a pianist, the cello was her instrument of choice all through high school. Carolyn graduated from Beloit Memorial high school in 1954. She attended Madison College, Madison, WI and Truman State University, Kirksville, MO. She then married James R. Harley, with whom she enjoyed 64 years of marriage. They were a devoted couple to each other. She traveled with him while he was in the Air Force to Missouri and Texas before settling down in Rockford, IL. She attended Rockford College where she earned a degree in business. She began her career at Sundstrand Corporation in Rockford, IL as a buyer. In 1979 Carolyn and her family returned to Beloit to care for her grandmother. She then began working for the City of Beloit housing department and Beloit Police department until she retired in 1995.
Carolyn was very involved in christian work, serving as pianist, choir director, and soloist for second Methodist church in Beloit, WI, Miles Memorial CME Church Rockford, Il, Saint Matthias, Beloit, WI and an active choir member at Emmanuel Baptist Church, Beloit, WI.
Carolyn served as secretary of The NAACP Beloit Branch, Angel Museum volunteer and donated many hours as a Beloit Memorial Hospital volunteer.
Carolyn found joy in most aspects of life. She loved the Lord, her husband, her children, her grandchildren, sending cards to all her friends and family, gardening, baking, and her childhood in “The Flats”
Preceding her in death were her parents, Beulah Slaughter, Dr. William Marshall, stepfather Thomas Freeman Slaughter, aunt Genevieve Jones, uncle James Hyde, aunt Mildred Hyde, brother Donald Slaughter, brother Dr. William Marshall Jr, sister Nellie Kendrick, brother Bill Slaughter, father-in-law John Ed Harley, mother-in-law Mary Harley, sister-in-law Ora Harley, brother-in-law Charles Harley, and grandson Trevelle Harley. She is survived by her loving husband James Harley of Beloit, WI;, daughter Jaemie Harley of Beloit, WI;, son Garvin Harley of Beloit, WI; granddaughter Terrell Harley of Atlanta, GA, granddaughter Lyric Parks of Beloit,WI; granddaughter Melody Parks of Beloit, WI, great granddaughter Harmoni Clarke of Beloit, WI, brother Thomas Slaughter of Piscataway, NJ; sister Judith (Jess)Marshall of Piscataway, NJ; brother Robert Slaughter of Chicago, IL; and special cousins Robert Hyde, Sandra Payne, and Gerald Hyde of Beloit, WI ;Mildred Hyde Demoze and Lynette Hyde of Charlotte, NC .
